Today, GLOWS is involved in projects in Peru, Ecuador, India, Tanzania, Kenya, and Morocco. In Peru and Ecuador, GLOWS intervention in the Pastaza basin aims at improving the livelihoods of native people while protecting the area’s rich ecosystems. GLOWS efforts in the Wakel River Basin, India, build upon the ongoing activities of its partner, World Vision, at the Navprabhat Area Development Project (ADP) and involve activities such as modifications to the landscape (e.g., soil bounding, gulley-plugging, check dams) to minimize rainwater runoff and erosion, making more water available for crops like rice and maize.
GLOWS
focus in Africa follows the priority set by the US Government in this
continent. In this context, in the Mara
River Basin (Kenya and Tanzania) GLOWS is working with government and local
communities across the region to understand the system hydrology and
environmental flows, increase stakeholder participation in water management,
and explore new approaches to increase economic benefits. GLOWS activities in
the Mara are designed to support the Nile Basin Initiative process to establish
a framework for the cooperative management of the basin water resources. In Morocco, in the context of the project "Improved
Access and Water Use in Rural Morocco", GLOWS is working to improve access to water among rural households,
thus contributing to attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in this
country. Finally, in Tanzania, through the Integrated Water,
sanitation and Hygiene Program (i-WASH), GLOWS will support sustainable,
market-driven water supply, sanitation, and hygiene services to improve health,
and increase economic resiliency of the poor in targeted rural areas and small
towns within and integrated water resources management framework.
